Having listened to the OCR of "Merrily" all my life, I know this brilliant score backwards and forwards - but I've never seen the show. I had no idea there is so much Gussie in the story. She has more lines than Mary! This is no slam against Krystal Joy Brown (she was fantastic), but there was TOO MUCH Gussie. Several of her scenes were unnecessary and could/should have been cut (the show feels about 20 minutes too long). Specifically, her scene at the Blob party right before "Good Thing Going" is sung. And if Gussie was Joe's secretary while Frank and Charlie auditioned for him, why does Frank later treat her with such reverence at the opening of their hit show, "Musical Husbands"? He even calls her "Miss Carnegie" as if she'd been a huge star for decades that he'd only recently met. And that's AFTER they've collaborated on the show for months. The character of Gussie felt outsized for the show - especially considering that attention to her took away from the attention to the overall friendship between Frank, Charlie, and Mary.
