There was much negative word of mouth, especially during the early previews, and this was reported in the press. I think the critics were influenced by this.

I think Prince was the right director. The whole thing was his idea. He had trouble coming up with a visual concept. The only thing he came up with that at all "resonated" [his word] for him was a bare stage with a worklight. When the houselights dimmed, the cast would bring on racks of costumes from which they would pull during the performance. But he was afraid that audiences who had paid good money would resent a bare stage, and he didn't do it. As he later realized, he should gone with it.

I agree that the Alvin/Neil Simon was too big. It probably should have been done Off-Broadway, but it would have seemed very odd for Prince and Sondheim to do a show Off-Broadway at that point. Perhaps one of the smaller Broadway houses would have worked. I wonder if the Alvin, having been the home to Forum and Company, resonated for them.
