I've always thought that rights for any given production could be pulled by the authors at any time before or during rehearsals and performances. Or maybe that differs with major productions and there's some agreement of a date that is a point of no return for the production.
Or is that Sondheim and Furth thought it was too late to do that without destroying relationships and causing headlines around the world?
Could they have sent a "cease and desist" letter about changes that were not approved? Or is that not a thing in the UK?
