The process of revision was largely done by the time of the Kerryson production at the Leicester Haymarket, but a few more changes were made for the York production, and that version became the official version.

No matter what he later said, Sondheim absolutely knew that the graduation scenes were going to be put back, at least they wanted to start previews with them. Sondheim said after the opening the he didn't know that Grandage was going to put back so much of the original version, and by the time he and Furth did know, it was too late to stop it.

Of course, years later in Finishing the Hat he at least seemed to think that Grandage did the revised version.
