Pegasus Players in Chicago did a production of Merrily in 1985 that was praised by Richard Christiansen of the Tribune. Both George Furth and Stephen Sondheim had a strong connection to this non-equity theatre group. Furth directed a couple of his plays there. Sondheim had them videotape every production they did of his musicals and send him a cassette of each. His musical Saturday Night made its American debut at this group's theater in 1999. I met Sondheim there twice in 1999. Initially he and Gary Griffin led a talkback after the performance I saw of Saturday. Later I attended a lecture he gave there primarily for the students of Truman College and other interested parties. |
