I'm posting this because, it's a musical, sort of, LOL. I know this film is very divisive, and with the recent controversy surrounding Karla Sofia Gascon, even more so. I enjoyed it, though it's far from a perfect movie. The storyline gets crushed by the weight of it's ambitions but I appreciated what the filmmaker tried to do. The songs, such as they are, aren't really songs as much sung speaking that propel the story forward, which I also appreciated. None of it's particularly memorable, but, this will get me in trouble, I liked it better than Wicked. I don't understand the Oscar nominations, Zoe Saldana clearly has the biggest role but she's up for supporting actress. Is it just me or does screen time matter? Anyhow, I thought the leads were very good and heck, a trans woman is nominated for an Oscar. Now for the controversy that's popped that balloon, what Karla tweeted was hurtful and bad, what possesses a celebrity to share those kinds of feelings, I'll never know. But, she's apologized and though I've not read the statements she's released, if she's apologized, shown contrition and has vowed to change, what more can she do? I'm alarmed at the speed of the snowball cancellation effect. Especially since we're being led by YOU KNOW WHO, who's posted worse and has put into place some of the lowest of lows as far hateful people, and not only do they NOT get cancelled, they re elected to the most powerful office and responsibilities in the world, as well as enjoy being richer than God and apparently the US thinks HE'S doing a good job. It's mind boggling. No one gets cancelled faster than a trans woman of color, just saying. Discuss.
