Yes for sure. And I don't think Karla was the second-front runner before the controversy either. But it is funny, as you point out, Demi's sincere speech about never winning awards... upon my second watching of it, I found it, as they say now, cringe. The idea that she is owed an award for her acting career. The reward is an incredible acting career being one of the biggest box office stars for two decades, playing interesting characters, and being considered one of the most beautiful AND sexiest people alive, STILL. To push the narrative that she was some under-appreciated acting great who was ghettoized by awards because she did mostly blockbuster or "popcorn" movies, but that, what, she was giving Oscar worthy performances in them, like The Substance, and those movies containing her Oscar worthy performance were as impressive as The Substance (it's the combo that does it, it's hard to win Best Actress in any movie people consider not good, let alone a genre movie) ... or that she gave up acting for awhile or debated it because she wasn't getting awards or critical recognition -- if that's the reason, that's a personal journey for her to navigate, but I have no sympathy for it. Even after the 00s she had the power, fame and resources to get an interesting indie movie made with a juicy role that could redefine her as an actor, and she didn't. Demi was blessed with one of the best careers you could ask for, and had the power to decide what she wanted to do. She often did interesting roles but not necessarily in movies/scripts that are quite worthy of awards that are theoretically meant for the best in the craft of filmmaking, directing, acting, writing. Anyway, the point is, it's funny how awards happen and to whom and when and why and what alchemy has to take place in culture and critics and audiences and movie trends and social issues etc etc. |
