-"you took what I posted and perverted it" No, I absolutely did not. I didn't even twist it, but I did nothing close to "perverting" it. -"According to you, she didn't show contrition" No, this isn't just according to me, in fact I'm not even the only person in this thread to correct you on this... this being YOUR take, based on admittedly not having read the tweets or followed the posts of supposed apology. I've actually read the tweets and the apologies... but I guess my take on it, even though informed, unlike yours, is wrong because... what? Because I don't agree with your assessment or painting of it? *You're* the one who chose the word contrition. I also didn't even say what I felt about her tweets. For all you know I agreed with them and/or don't think she needs to apologize at all. Frankly, I'm not all that invested. I actually know the content of the issue, unlike you, but I didn't come here to write a random post criticizing her or demanding she show more contrition. *You* came here and wrote a random post, admittedly based on little knowledge of the situation or basis for the supposed offense, taking issue with the backlash, and implying that it is due in part to transphobia and racist and misogyny. -"It is very unlikely she's going to win Best Actress. What, a trans woman of color, ya think? This is America." This is exactly what I'm talking about. She was very unlikely to win before this outrage *because most people do not seem to think her movie is a good movie* and so she had little chance of taking home the prize. Her nomination was the win. A lot of people would actually suggest that she only got nominated for a movie that is considered to be pretty embarrassingly bad *because* she is a trans woman of color, as you keep saying. I have not seen the movie yet, just some clips. I'm not offering an opinion are the strength of her performance, I'm talking about what the resounding chatter in Hollywood and among internet film fans is. But she is also nominated against her co-star Zoe SaldaƱa, who not only has a bigger and flashier role, but has been winning all the awards and getting all the buzz and was the clear front runner to win, beating the other nominees including Karla. Not because Karla is a trans woman of color (Zoe is also a woman of color), but because that is where the heat and love for the performance has been, coupled with a long career of being a huge box office movie star with no major awards to show for it. Let's even say Karla gave the BEST performance of these 5 performances... which I haven't heard a single friend or associate or film critic or podcaster etc say, but let's just say it's true... her losing would not just automatically be due to transphobia or racism or misogyny. -"Very few people get canceled?" ... yes. Naming A FEW PEOPLE who got truly canceled does not disprove this. Not only did you just name a few, but they all got canceled in the early height of cancel culture being a real thing. The tweets in question have are considered deeply offensive to black people, Asian people, Muslim people, and more. Netflix has decided not to pay for her to make appearances promoting the film or campaigning to win any Oscars. That hasn't even stopped her from doing interviews. Netflix has the right to do that... but they aren't doing it because they want to silence a trans woman of color. -"I'm not giving her a pass." You are. -"But I think the only thing that would satisfy you is if she appeared in front of a crowd of people who would get up one at a time to chastise and verbally throw mud at her" Frankly, what the f are you talking about? The hyperbole is hilarious. Talk about perverting what was said. I didn't even ask for her to apologize more or better, or express more contrition. I observed the factual reality that she is doing that very effectively. It's very confusing that you are outraged about people being offended or wanted a real apology from someone about recent tweets expressing views generally seen as expressing racism to blacks, to asians, xenophobia, islamophobia, both anti-semitic AND Hitler apologist, and many more... and you're talking to me as if i'm a small minded racist transphobic bigot or something. Very topsy-turvy. I think you'd be more at home on twitter. But good luck to you, I don't think we have much need to keep going on this. |
