Let's also be clear... people were upset about this movie before any of this tweet stuff (or her minor tangle with Fernanda happened, which sparked talk of her nomination being revoked for breaking Oscar rules about shit-talking other nominees)... for reasons that would have effected her chances of actually taking home the win... The main complaints seem to be (and these are not my opinions, but the opinions of those mad about the movie: -no one, including Karla, in a movie about Mexican characters, is Mexican (Karla is from Spain -- as her tweets about Muslims in Spain can tell you) -the movie about Mexicans in Mexico and about a trans character is made in Europe, by a white French man, who openly admits he did no research on any of the things the movie is about (I don't necessarily have a problem with this if it's good) -the movie trades in stereotypes and iffy-at-best depictions of Mexicans and trans people (this is what's being said by Mexicans and trans people, I haven't even seen it yet) -it's seen by many as a mess of a movie, even by those who liked it -it's a musical with mostly bad and sometimes embarrassing songs All of this is part of why her chances at winning, let alone winning against frontrunner and co-star Zoe SaldaƱa, were slim. Being pushed over the edge into having no chance at winning due to her own words outraging so many groups of people... I don't think this is the good fight you think it is. |
