I don't think this is the righteous polemic you think it is... | |

...yes, of course racism, xenophobia, transphobia all play a role in how a public figure is treated -- especially when they've strayed from the path. But that's a pretty wild take on this particular case. I'm team Katya on this film (if you know, you know.) I think it is a shockingly awful film -- not because of its subject matter, of course -- but because of the disastrous execution. It's still hard for me to believe that the director of The Beat That My Heart Skipped, Dheepan, A Prophet and Rust & Bone made this dreck. But, all that aside, even if I loved the film, I would support the the backlash Karla has received. I will say, one thing that's warmed my heart a bit in the last couple of weeks is seeing how roundly Karla has been raked over the coals for her now well-documented and shockingly consistent HISTORY of racism, xenophobia and misogyny. I think holding her to account -- not because she's a trans woman -- but because, despite her protestations, she is a documented racist and bigot is a sign of progress. And, please, be a god damn grown up. Karla publicly expressing her sadness and disappointment about having your obvious bigotry called out is NOT the same thing as contrition or remorse. If you read her statements or see her interviews, you will very clearly see she is not regretful about her past behavior, she's regretful that it's come to light and that she's being confronted about it. "How could *I*, a Spanish-speaking trans woman possibly express any kind of bigotry," is what she's basically saying. And, yes, it has entered can't-look-away-from-this-trainwreck territory because of her public display of crocodile tears and complete ineptitude when it comes to handling a crisis. The fact that Netflix has erased her (the LEAD of her film) from the For Your Consideration campaigns for the film and that they've refused to pay for her travel and expenses related to promoting the film should tell you everything. I mean, the woman has tweets attacking her costar Selena Gomez. Tweets that were published AFTER Selena was cast in the film. She's not only a racist xenophobe, she's also just flat out dumb and she's earned every bit of the public ire she's received. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression does not mean freedom from the consequences of that expression. This woman is the poster child for fuck around and find out. And if she never makes another film again, I'll cry some crocodile tears for her, too. Anyway, thanks for wasting everyone's time with your Freshman state college thesis. |
