According to Playbill.com, the 1948 Kurt Weill/Alan Jay Lerner show "Love Life" will finally get a long-overdue complete recording. For Weill enthusiasts, it has always been "the score that got away," to paraphrase a lyric from one of Weill's other collaborators. Opera North's production will be released on CD; they also mention it may be filmed for broadcast. While great news, I was hoping that the upcoming Encores production would be the one to get a complete recording, and I expect it is highly unlikely we would get two. Opera casts for Broadway musicals are iffy. On the plus side, the record label, Capriccio, has done a terrific job recording nearly all of Weill's German works. We'll see. |
