The Weill estate has (or at least historically has had) a reputation for being notoriously tricky — very particular about what they give rights and permissions and approval for. I’m more than a little stunned they would agree to the first full length commercial recording of this score from a European opera company only 2 months before its first revival where it started, in New York City, with a Broadway-caliber cast and orchestra. (Especially since it’s decidedly a concept musical and not inherently an operatic work). Encores has a great track record for their recordings - and this is an Encores production that would’ve happened (along with, almost certainly, a recording) 5 years earlier, if not for the pandemic. Very strange. |
