I found the examples in the NY Times article trite and bombastic. Comparing this to Don't Rain on My Parade is just plain silly. First of all, don't rain on my parade is a metaphor. 2. it occurs at the end of Act 1 when we know Fanny and that she wants Nick. (not to be the greatest star - the latter early in the show is ironic no one knows it). 3. Funny Girl is about Fanny Brice. Smash is about putting on a musical about Marilyn Monroe. The want in putting on a show is to hae it succeed and be good. Notice in Kiss Me, Kate the opening in Another Openin' Another show in which the chorus etc worry about the show succeeding. The show and its musical version of Taming of the Show are ironic mirror images as well we hear Lilly's I want (So in Love) before we hear Kate's I hate Men. We also hear from Lois why can't you behave long before she's Bianca. The parade metaphor occurs at the end of Act I of Dolly Before the Parade Passes By. She wants to come out of her shell before it's too late and there is then an actual parade which she is attending. Everything's Coming Up Roses also occurs at the end of Act I and, as befits one of the small handful of the greatest plays ever, is also ironic. Smash can also mean splat. | |
