Fair Question. I feel it is wrong as it is not an I want song for the leading character but for a character in a play within the play. As the show is called Smash, it is not about Marilyn Monroe but about a show about Marilyn Monroe. The person(s) we need to care about are the characters in the play itself. The play within Hamlet is to 'get the conscience of the king' Hamlet begins with Hamlet's father's ghost setting up Hamlet's quest. The play within the play here serves the play not itself. In Kiss Me, Kate So In Love is reflected in the inner play's I Hate Men. Horse before cart etc. Even in The Drowsy Chaperone the Man in the Chair's want is the start. It gives weight to the musical spoof that is most of the evening. The inner play here is meaningful to the man in the chair.
