Fair question indeed. You do not know what the creators of the show are up to, but you're making judgement calls based on your assumptions all the same. That's entirely unfair. Clearly this is not going to unfold like the TV series at all, and the song is going to serve a different function. (That is in fact the point of the article.) You don't know the structure they're developing and you're making A LOT of assumptions. This is not Hamlet or Kiss me Kate or Funny Girl or any of the other "supposition" examples you're using - clearly it's going to be a different kind of structure. And, as someone else rightly pointed out, the reference in the interview to "Don't Rain On My Parade" has nothing to do with your analysis of the song. Clearly they were talking about the feel and tone of the song and how it lands on the audience, not how it fits into the plot. How about seeing the show first? Then ask the questions based on what the show actually is? I'd also suggest you take a few breaths and read the article again with a clear head. |
