I was surprised to read that the cast album was recorded in the beginning of January. They must feel pretty confident that there aren't going to be relevant changes during the preview period. I gotta say, I find their approach to moving Smash from the TV screen to the Broadway stage to be odd. I feel like they could have basically put the TV show on stage, or they could have put Bombshell, the fictional Marilyn Monroe musical that drove much of the plot of the TV show, on stage. But it seems that they are doing neither. The plot of the stage musical of Smash only has mild overlap with the plot of the TV show. It feels a little bit like they're making things different for the sake of making things different. Why do they need to "reimagine" the songs from the TV show? If it ain't broke, don't "reimagine" it. It reminds me of some replacement actors, who sometimes go out of their way to give different line readings than the original cast member. But the reason the original cast member did that particular line reading is because that's the line reading that makes the most sense. |
