YELLOW FACE Last Night

An identity politics farce that’s mostly sharp and funny. Then things get more overtly serious. Hwang’s written a buoyant and prickly burlesque of identity politics that’s keenly directed and very well acted. But when the play veers into the repercussions of a race baiting Chinese espionage scandal it loses some comic steam that it never fully recovers. The play shifts awkwardly from (very) broad comedy to a more blunt critique. Though YELLOW FACE is a better, and more effective, slapstick than it is a social comedy, it nonetheless manages to be both rollicking and appreciably rancorous. It’s fast and furious which, these days, may be the only way to run.
