I'm a bit confused by it, too, but I also think that if Mister Puntila and His Man Matti or Titus Andronics were to receive a Broadway production sometime soon, they would be considered revivals for purposes of the Tonys, and that if someone revived Salvation Nell (which I would love to see), I think that would also be considered a revival. As for On Your Toes, it has, of course, been revived on Broadway twice, in 1954 and 1983 (both times with some significant revisions from the original), so it would definitely be a revival. On the other hand, although The Caucasian Chalk Circle was produced in 1965 by the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center and it is listed on ibdb, the productions of that company were deemed ineligible for Tonys so I wonder what the Tonys committee would decide if someone were to produce it on Broadway. (Papp had the clout to get the Tonys to consider the NYSF productions at the Beaumont eligible.) But maybe I'm misunderstanding the whole thing. |
