CATS - THE JELLICLE BALL

What a riot. It turns out that setting CATS in the world of drag ballroom vogueing was a genius idea, and sometimes brings out new meanings in the songs you didn't know were there. Most of the time the update suits the already episodic material & when it doesn't you can still enjoy the fabulous choreography & costumes. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber was sitting right in front of me and clearly having a great time, and when Andre DeShields hit a high note and held it I thought Sir Andrew was having a kiniption. My favorite moment was the 2nd Act opener, "The Moments of Happiness" sung by Old Deuteronomy (DeShields), a song that has never made sense to me after seeing CATS as many times as I have but this version pays tribute to the drag ball legends we saw in "Paris Is Burning" and it's incredibly moving. The gender queer cast is composed of 1st rate singers & dancers and the audience goes insane, certainly with more whooping and screaming than any previous production has ever had. Another highlight is ballroom legend Junior LaBeija as Gus The Theatre Cat. Overall, this is so much better an update of an old musical than the ghastly Daniel Fish directed OKLAHOMA! which in my opinion trashed the original.
