Personally, I never thought the problem with Cats was the score. I always thought the original production worked against the whimsical nature of the poems and ALW's often playful music, with this pretentious, overchoreographed "hey, we're trying to act like cats up here, dammit, take us seriously" tone. It sounds to me like this production has found the joy, humanity, and irreverence that the original never had.
