I think the original production tried way way way too hard to be painfully, obviously literal. As did Beauty And The Beast. As did The Little Mermaid with those god-awful heelys and constant arm flapping. I celebrate that this production of Cats can be textually about cats without having to try to make human actors into literal cats. isn't it more fun to go with the whimsical nature of the poems and the music and not be roped in by literal imagery? Is that really a "radical revisionist take?" I don't think so.

What the Met just did with Carmen - that's a radical revisionist take. And it's horrid.
