One of the great things about the role of Dolly is that it's really open to a lot of very charming, funny ladies. It hasn't the need of a terrific voice, though wonderful singers like Barbra Streisand, Ethel Merman and Martha Raye have done it. It's not a marathon of a role, because the vocal demands (and even stage time) is, for the most part, well spaced out -- though Bette Midler seemed to only want to do 7 shows a week in more recent times. But ladies who, if health permitted, might have made wonderful Dollys also included the likes of Judy Holliday, Shirley Booth and yes, Doris Day. Day could be a bit acerbic if need be -- as witness some of her exchanges in "Pillow Talk" with Rock Hudson on the shared party line or in "Lover Come Back" when rival adman Hudson isn't trying to seduce her. Channing actually got an Oscar nomination for "Millie", but apparently it still scared execs producing the movie of "Dolly".

Of course, "Mame" is a lot harder to cast -- sophistication, voice to put over "If He Walked Into My Life", believably liking and having chemistry with the kid who is cast as Patrick, some measure of authority yet being able to show vulnerability and also klutziness ("The Man in the Moon"), dance ability as originally it was done with a big jitterbug, and someone who suggests Old money gone bohemian, among other things, etc.

I believe that a story adaptation of "The Sound of Music" in paperback had a cover that I've seen on-line with a Maria that looks just like Doris Day, so she was most likely considered for that film at some point. But still wondering if anyone ever heard of some news report or something like an Earl Wilson or Walter Winchell item that said that Doris Day is up for/sought for/considering doing, etc. some upcoming at the time specific musical.
