Streisand also did some concerts for charitable and political causes. She might have gotten more movie offers, but perhaps didn't want to accept less than top billing. I was kind of amazed seeing her getting 4th billing for those Focker movies she did. One way she's been quite smart over the years was to space out her appearances (and films) so that they seemed to be special events. On the other hand, she extended apparently so much energy on "Yentl" and the other films she directed, it's a shame she seemed to tire herself out and didn't try to do "Gypsy" or other films when she was age appropriate.

Day had some bad experiences with an abusive husband around the time she was singing with the bands, if I recall correctly. Perhaps she associated singing live with those kind of memories? Streisand stayed away from the stage because of verbal abuse from Sydney Chaplin during "Funny Girl", only recently revealed in her autobiography. I think Doris suffered physical abuse as well unfortunately, but at least she got away from him.
