A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC concert at Lincoln Center

One might write it off to first night mess. The cast and orchestra seemed underrehearsed. In the first tier on the right side of the auditorium, most of the words were unintelligible and/or inaudible. The sound rig seemed aimed only straight out at the main part of the auditorium. Some pitchy singing.
But most surprising was that all the tempi seemed to be deathly slow. And some odd casting. All talented people - but - casting. Susan Graham was a terrific opera star - the voice is faded but still OK. But acting? No. Marsha Mason as Madame Armfeldt - acting ok. Singing. None. Shuler Hensley as Count Magnus? Not really. I imagine all will get better as the weekend progresses, but I don't imagine the tempi will pick up. And you can't fix casting errors. The sound designer could fix things maybe - if they have the rig in the right place. The two standouts were Ruthie Ann Miles as the Countess, and Cynthia Erivo as Petra.

Best part of the evening was that they didn't use the bouncing lights.
