| Even if reports from performance 1 were great, the casting has been bizarrely low-wattage since it was announced and the ticket prices were so high. I don't know what ever made them think this was an exciting cast for this show, but when the biggest draws are cast as Petra and Charlotte, who each have 1 song... you know something is off in the producing/conceiving of this production. And no disrespect to the fantastic and very talented Ron Raines, but a 74 year old Fredrick is creepy even for this show. It is legitimately harmful to the tone of the show, the comedy, the romance, to have a 74 year old married to and trying to having sex with an 18 year old virgin bride. Fredrick should ideally read as 40ish (38-48 tops, he's meant to be "middle-age" in 1900, and his son with his first wife is 20). I know it's a concert but even still. A lot of people today can barely settle with 40 and 18, even in 1900 Sweden, but 70s? Obviously they won't be referring to his age, but spry and handsome as he may be, Raines reads at least 60s, no? The show is not written to support the weight of or circumstance of that kind of extreme and even much creepier age difference. Having recently seen it done with a 59 year old Michael Hayden (I defend him every chance I get in Carousel, but he was the 1 weak link in the lead cast of an otherwise exquisite production), it thew the tone off and was weird even with him at that age. Raines is 15 years old than that! And while I'm at it, Susan Graham, even if she were perfect for the role as an actor (it seems she is not), even if she were a draw who people would be excited to see in this role (she is not), she is in her 60s. Desiree has a 13 year old daughter... Okay, it's a concert. If this were Chita Rivera in the role in her 60s I'd surely be defending it as perfectly justified since it's not a full production, and it's a broadway star I'd love to see in the role. But it's not. When I saw the cast I knew I would not be spending their absurd prices to see it. Baffling. |
