A LITTLE SLOW MUSIC!!

The occasion of this concert was the premiere of Jonathan Tunick's new symphony/opera-sized version of his original orchestrations. The music sounds gorgeous. Unfortunately, Tunick's tempos were way too slow, which sapped the lyrics' energy and hurt the delivery of jokes. I suspect Sondheim would not have been pleased. You could hear the cast trying to push the tempos. A Little Slow Music indeed.

I've been wondering why this concert (with exceptions) did not attract more of an A-list cast. Mezzo-soprano, Susan Graham was lovely, but she was sort of a 'good community theater' Desiree. Marsha Mason wasn't helped by a very slow "Liaisons" Ruthie Ann Miles killed as Charlotte. Shuler Hensley was an odd choice for Count Malcolm, but he made some good character choices, though he wasn't in great voice. Ron Raines is as charismatic as ever, in fine voice, but despite having their scripts, he and Graham went up a bit on "You Must Meet My Wife." Cynthia Erivo kicked ass on "The Miller's Son" and she got laughs throughout, but it's not really a good role for her. The book (which I love) was smartly edited, I assume using MTI's concert version.
The unexpected addition was the restoration of the beautiful (art-song), "Silly People," which proved again that Frid doesn't deserve a 4-minute song after pushing the wheelchair around all night. Stop trying to make Frid happen 🙂

I hope the cast begs Tunick to pick up the tempos for the rest of the short run. A livelier baton would make everything play better.
