These days, if I were a producer, I would have to see a show with no famous writers and no names in the cast except two relatively big theater-only names, and it was 2 months away from a year on Broadway with no sign of closing, I'd call that a smash hit. I know this is not how hit or smash are defined but it feels like quite an accomplishment. Especially since it got only 1 Tony nom, for costumes, which it won but that means little at the box office (though I do think the buzz that this is a show with sets and costumes like a big musical does help interest in it). Other new musicals that competed for the big prizes and had performances on the Tonys telecast have already closed. | |
