| Thanks for doing the work :-) Questions like this are sometimes asked in a vaccuum and it's important to consider context. You sort of touched on it, but for Wicked specifically it bears repeating that the show...and in many cases the score...did not get great reviews. I recently re-read many of them in light of the film coming out. Also, Avenue Q was just so delightful and I think it deserved all the recognition it got. Maybe it seems unfair or unbalanced since it closed so long ago and Wicked still runs, but it also bears remembering that comedies, and topical comedies, just don't achieve the juggernait Broadway runs no matter how excellent they may be. Mega hit toast-of-the-town, Tony-winning-best-score shows like The Producers and Hairspray, for example, each only played around 6 years. And as a side note I agree that Caroline outshines them all. I think being such a short run flop, and frankly so musically ambitious and balatanly non-commerical (Tesori says this herself), it was going to be tough for it to win best score. I am a musician (for fun) and understand music theory and still had to live with the score for many repeat viewings and listenings to truly understand its brilliance. And the first time it left me totally baffled. So ultimately I can see how it wasn't understood as the best score. |
