But what is the Best Musical Tony meant to represent? The consensus choice of the Tony voters? Or the show that needs the Tony win the most to continue commercially? And if it's the last one, who's to say which show better ''needs'' the Best Musical win, so they can better market themselves?

Sometimes, the Tonys do award the critics' darling over the far better-selling show. Like when ''Passion'' won over ''Beauty and the Beast.'' Or when ''A Strange Loop'' won over ''MJ.'' ... No doubt their wins helped ''Passion'' and ''A Strange Loop'' run a little longer, but neither could crack 300 performances. Which only tells me that a Tony win can only take you so far. It couldn't turn ''Passion'' or ''A Strange Loop'' into a mainstream hit.

For many, many years, I was an Outer Critics Circle voter and a Drama Desk voter, and I always voted for the shows that I enjoyed the most and would be willing to see again. Maybe it's just me, but my choices never took into account which show ''needed'' to win more for their marketing campaigns.
