| I LOVE ''Avenue Q'' and saw it multiple times at the Vineyard, the Golden and even at New World Stages. They ran a savvy campaign as the Tony underdog to ''Wicked,'' imploring Tony voters to ''Vote Your Heart.'' I recall a gigantic party they threw for road and tour producers at John's Pizzeria, plugging how ''Avenue Q'' would be coming to their cities and towns. ... And then the day after its surprise Best Musical win, ''Avenue Q'' did something so cynical: They announced they would be doing an exclusive sit-down run at Wynn Las Vegas before playing anywhere else in the country. Wynn even spent $$$ to create a special theater to house ''Avenue Q.'' Alas, it was not a Las Vegas bet that paid off. In the land of splashy showgirl spectacles and Cirque du Soleil, Las Vegas showgoers weren't all that interested in catching a cute and clever puppet show, even one that won Best Musical, in a 1,200-seat theater. Its ''Vote Your Heart'' campaign always irked me. ''Wicked'' is still running over 20 years later, proof that many people have taken it to their heart, too. |
