| In an interview for the Met (with the premiere of Grounded this season), Tesori spoke about her different approaches in writing for Broadway vs. opera - essentially that her musical vocabulary in opera can afford to be more daring and dissonant - something she doesn't do so much for Broadway because of audience expectations. But I agree that she kind of crossed the line with Caroline - deliberately, it seems. I LOVE Caroline Or Change as you do. But it certainly wasn't in the same vein we expected from Violet or certainly Millie before it - or Shrek after it, and even Fun Home and Kimberly Akimbo. I tend to wonder if there are smaller opera companies who eventually might want to try Caroline, even though they'd want to import some Broadway-style voices. (No, I do NOT want to hear the likes of Angel Blue killing her voice singing Caroline. Though if she would sing the Moon, that might be something to hear!) |
