It's also necessary for younger Wicked fans, or broadway-ignorant fans who don't care to think of the context of anything, to remember that **very few musicals run as long as Wicked**, even half as long. Avenue Q was a monster hit relevant to most Broadway runs, and especially when you consider that you can't take families to it (i mean you can, i would, but most families likely don't think so). It is an adult musical with puppets. And it ran for 6 years before transferring off-broadway to continue. Fans don't seem to think about two things, A) beyond that the show got mixed reviews, no one knew it would hit such a nerve and be such an insane long running hit when it opened or when Tonys were given... but ALSO that should be irrelevant to voting for the awards, and B) No show runs as long as Wicked (other than Phantom, Chicago revival, and Lion King... not even Les Miz, not even Cats!) So thinking about how much longer Wicked ran than Avenue is totally pointless. After 4 years, let alone 6, it's all just cake... there's no reason to compare their runs because they are incomparable, but both shows have runs any writer, or even producer, would dream of. |
