Judy Holliday would have humanized Rose certainly and made her agreeable and even lovable at times. But a good director would have probably made sure she could at times risk being disliked by her daughters and the audience, since Rose has, at heart, selfish motives. It would have been to some extent playing against type. Now, had she lived, Judy would have been a superb Dolly Levi in "Hello, Dolly!", even adding a bit of playing dumb a la Billie Dawn at times for Horace Vandergelder about her marital plotting.
