I would say that 20-25 minutes of singing is a lot for someone in a musical. While there are other leads in other musicals who have to sing around that much, most leads in most musicals sing less than that. It's really surprising how little most leads in most musicals sing. Of course, it's also pretty easy to find leads in musicals who sing around as much as Rose does, and a very few who sing more, that much singing eight times a week is a lot.

I would say that "Together," which, of course, is a good deal longer than what we hear on the OBCR, is carried by Rose, but, yes, it's an easy sing by itself. I agree that the second act is relatively easy for Rose, but that's a bit dangerous in itself in that after she has not sung for quite some time (except the tiny reprise of "Small World," cut in Laurents's last revision), she has to go out there and deliver "Rose's Turn," much of which, admittedly, is semi-spoken. A Rose could perhaps warm up her voice a bit during the strip.

According to Brian Kellow's not-always-accurate bio of Merman, Merman's throat doctor warned her early in rehearsals that the songs were keyed slightly too high for her and that she might suffer vocal problems as a result. She ignored his advice to have the songs put in lower keys.
