And the fact that the Karen character seems to have no experience, no resume, no agent and yet is vying for the lead in an expensive Broadway bound musical. In fact, agents don't seem to exist in the SMASH universe at all.

Such a character would never ever be trusted with the lead in a show like BOMBSHELL, simply because she's too green and untested. The unknown quantity who comes in to an open call and gives a great audition is probably going to be offered an ensemble role, if anything, and, if she was very lucky, might be put in as a second cover to one of the leads. This was a huge flaw with the conception of the character and show's insistence that she's just as viable a choice as Megan Hilty's character, who's not only more physically right for the role, but who has a long Broadway resume.

What they should have done was make the Karen character an experienced actress who's played every leading role in the canon everywhere in the country, except New York. She's done national tours, regional theatre, summer stock, dinner theatre...she's been everywhere and played every role. But she's never originated anything and there's a sense that maybe she just doesn't have that It Factor to create a role on Broadway...and BOMBSHELL might be her very last chance to grab the brass ring. And then contrast that character with the Ivy character who has been in the ensembles of a dozen Broadway shows and knows everyone and everything, but who has never had more than 3 lines in anything and people kind of think that she's just fine in the ensemble, but not good enough to play a leading role...and BOMBSHELL might also be her very last chance to try to break out of the ensemble.

Then both characters would have made sense and the idea that different members of the creative team would favor one or the other would actually make sense as well. This one wants a real actress with experience in the spotlight and leading a company...that one wants the one they know can handle Broadway (and the tumultuous process of putting together a new musical) and who they've worked with several times before.

All that said, I would love for Peacock to order a new season of SMASH and let us check in on these characters 15 years later (or whatever it's been) as they reunite to create a new show for Broadway.
