Andrew Barth Feldman came as the 4th or 5th replacement in a well established production.

I don't really know the other two, so you may have points there. MEAN GIRLS (which I haven't seen...only the two films) seems very much like an ensemble show. Was Rapp's role as big or as central a driving force as the Marilyn role in BOMBSHELL? Likes might even be a better example, although I don't know ALMOST FAMOUS at all. Did he have to carry it alone?

It's probably true that chorus members don't get bumped up a lot to leads, but it happens. Donna McKechnie started in the chorus and eventually grew into leads thanks to creatives like Michael Bennett and Hal Prince who believed in her. Scott Wise did this for awhile, but I think ended up (sort of like Cassie) going back into the chorus.

I think Ivy's situation as presented in SMASH is much more a likely thing that could happen, especially given how physically right she is for the role and how vocally right she is for the score that's been written, than Karen's situation. I believe Ivy is also presented as a close personal friend of Tom's and Julia's (the writing team...and, of course, Tom eventually becomes the director).

I based my thought that Karen doesn't have much experience or much of a resume on my memories of how her character is written and presented. She doesn't seem to know anyone else involved with BOMBSHELL and never seems to talk about having done this or that show elsewhere. The producer and the creatives never seem to mention any previous credits or having reached out to anyone who's worked with her. A lot of break time in rehearsals, especially at the beginning is the folks involved talking to each other and connecting about mutual friends or shows they've done together or places they've worked. Karen doesn't seem to do much, if any, of that. It doesn't even seem like she's ever run into any of these folks at auditions and said hi. It's probably a fault in the writing, to be honest.
