Regarding Hilty’s appearance, you’re probably right that the blond hair goes a long way, but she also has the curvy figure that Monroe had, much more so than McPhee.

This may be more a reflection on McPhee’s acting, but I remember watching scenes of both as Monroe and thinking that Karen was working as hard as she could to play Monroe, while Ivy just seemed to naturally exist as Monroe and just be her.

It would likely have been better if the creators of SMASH had made the musical within the show to be about something else, rather than such a well known figure as Marilyn Monroe. They would’ve had to have worked a little harder to establish the leading character and tell us who she is, but it would’ve been easier to see how the creative team could be divided over which interpretation they wanted to go with.

It would have been interesting to see where SMASH season 3 might have gone, with a pregnant Ivy forced to leave the show so much sooner than anyone planned. Would they have finagled a way to get Karen to leave HIT LIST and come back to BOMBSHELL? I don’t see why Karen would do that unless HIT LIST was closing anyway. But, for dramatic purposes it might have been fun. Or maybe season 3 might have picked up later after a time jump and had Karen and Ivy both cast as dual leads in a new show and needing to forge a new relationship as colleagues working together rather than rivals.
