The role of Martha Jefferson doesn't carry the show, she's in one scene. The casting of RENT was the point, I think. They wanted people without that Broadway polish with more of an indie rock sound...in any case, they had the experience developing this work and of an entire off-Broadway run before they hit the big show. Laura Benanti was an understudy and in the ensemble of THE SOUND OF MUSIC for a year before she took over the role.
None of these examples are analogous to Karen's situation in SMASH. |
