Chazwaza, I agree with many of your Tony observations. I, too, am glad the 1982 Tony Awards gave a nearly 9-minute sequence to ''Dreamgirls,'' consisting of ''It's All Over'' and ''I Am Telling You I'm Not Going.'' (If a ''Dreamgirls'' revival were eligible nowadays, they'd probably only do the latter song.) And granted, it might not be fair that ''Dreamgirls'' got so much more airtime than its Best Musical rivals. ''Nine,'' for instance, only got 5 minutes to do ''Be Italian'' with Kathi Moss, and the show's Tony-nominated leading man, Raul Julia, wasn't even featured. But ''Nine'' won Best Musical.

At the 1970 Tonys, ''Coco'' got 15 minutes; ''Purlie'' only got 10 minutes: for ''I Got Love'' and ''Walk Him Up the Stairs.'' ''Applause,'' about 11 minutes.

Somehow, I once thought the Tonys tried to give equal time to each Best Musical nominee. But this year, ''Hell's Kitchen'' got almost 8 minutes, thanks to Alicia Keys and Jay-Z. ''The Outsiders,'' 4-and-a-half minutes. ''Suffs,'' 'Illinoise'' and ''Water for Elephants'' were all under 4 minutes.

It's weird that none of the 1971 Best Musical nominees got to perform, but I loved that 25th anniversary Tony salute. Wish they did it every 25 years.

It's also puzzling that 3 of the 4 Best Musical nominees in 1972 didn't get to perform at the Tonys. Especially ''Follies,'' a 7-time Tony winner. Go figure!
