Until PBS recently broadcast ''Purlie Victorious,'' I had never seen Ossie Davis' original play. But I was always a fan of the 1970 musical adaptation, ''Purlie,'' by Philip Rose, Gary Geld and Peter Udell. I loved a 1981 revival that the Black Repertory Theater did in Berkeley, starring Donald Marshall and Shirley Faulkner, and there's a 1982 TV filmed stage version, starring Robert Guillaume and Melba Moore. I wondered why Odom didn't do ''Purlie'' instead.

I only recently read online somewhere that Odom was interested in doing the musical, but Davis' heirs/estate steered him to the play. They felt the popularity of the musical had overshadowed Davis' original work. Taste is subjective, but I enjoy the musical much more, especially those Geld-Udell songs.
