I actually had a nice, lengthy conversation with Leslie Odom about Purlie versus Purlie Victorious. As you would imagine, he has tremendous respect and love for Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, especially for the groundbreaking work they did all their lives in theatre and films, paving the way for African-American actors like Denzel Washington, him, and many others. He told me that the speeches and dialogue in Purlie Victorious are the heart and soul of what Ossie Davis stood for and believed in, while (and these are his exact words) "Purlie is not Ossie". He was pretty passionate about it.

He also said that he loved doing Purlie Victorious on stage even more than playing Burr in Hamilton.

For the record, I too love the score of Purlie as heard on the OBC album. I used to have the TV version of it with Robert Guillaume on VHS. I finally was able to see it on stage when the Goodman Theatre did it in 2005 with the formidable E. Faye Butler as Aunt Missy. It is a very fine musical play.
