It is sensational. I'm so glad for how long they let this go, and Dreamgirls is another amazing example of a very very long time gien to one show, and well worth it.

To be fair, in 1970 there were only 3 musicals nominated for Best Musical... the other two were Purlie, and the winner Applause. (Purlie probably should have won, Applause is not good, but I wasn't alive to see any of them). And no revival category or musical revivals in any nomination categories that might have been shown off for the season.

So there's more time to divide how its needed.

How infuriating that the next year there were also only 3, but we got no Tonys performances from Company, The Rothschilds, or The Me Nobody Knows. This was the year of the 25th anniversary retrospective, which is amazing, but I can't believe they didn't give any time to the 3 nominees.

I don't understand how the Tonys did things... in 1972 the nominees for Best Musical were Follies, 2 Gentlemen of Verona, Grease, and Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death... but the show represented in the telecast were, according to wiki anyway: Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death ("Put a Curse on You" - Company), the un-nominated Jesus Christ Superstar (Medley - Jeff Fenholt, Yvonne Elliman and Company), and the revival of No, No, Nanette ("You Can Dance With Any Girl" - Helen Gallagher and Bobby Van / "I Want to Be Happy" - Ruby Keeler and Company).

There are many other examples of shows not performing, or seemingly no logic to what show and why it gets to perform.
