| Yes, that London version of ''Merrily,'' directed by Maria Friedman, did win acclaim and even a 2013 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. But that didn't automatically lead to a Broadway transfer. In 2017, Friedman directed another ''Merrily'' revival, with Mark Umbers and Damian Humbley reprising their roles as Frank and Charley, but now with Eden Espinosa as Mary and an American cast. It played at the Huntington Theatre Company in Boston, but that didn't go to Broadway either. It's only this revival, blessed with the magical casting of Groff and Radcliffe, that has made it a Broadway hit. |
