Best Musical was a nail-biter, but a number of pundits picked ''Hell's Kitchen'' to win. Among the new musicals, it led the pack with the most Tony nominations (13). Alicia Keys reportedly made the rounds campaigning for her show. She even emailed all the nominators, which was OK within the rules.

That N.Y. Times poll of Tony voters seemed to hint they were leaning toward ''The Outsiders,'' even though it hadn't scored any notable precursor wins.

With ''The Outsiders'' winning the Tony, however, ''Jersey Boys'' maintains its record as the only pop jukebox show to win the Tony for Best Musical.

That surprise director win for Danya Taymor (Julie's niece), plus its wins for Lighting and Sound, tipped the hand that ''Outsiders'' was taking Best Musical.
