The Outsiders was really the underdog for Best Musical. I may have missed one during my quick check, but I think this is the first Best Musical ever that has an original score and did not win at least one of Book, Score, or an acting category. It also didn't win Best Musical at the Drama League (Hell's Kitchen won), the Outer Critics Circle (Suffs), the Drama Desks (Dead Outlaw), or the NY Critics Circle (Dead Outlaw again). It also didn't win Best Score/Music/Lyrics or Best Book for those awards bodies that had such awards (Suffs and Dead Outlaw won them). Nor did it win any acting awards from those bodies (although it won a Theatre World Award for Brody Grant), or Best Director (Maria Friedman or Jessica Stone won).

But it won where it counted, at least as far as box office goes. It was already shaping up to be a hit, with a steady rise in grosses since it started previews. It was the third-highest-grossing new musical last week, only behind Hell's Kitchen and The Great Gatsby, and very close to Hell's Kitchen for the highest average ticket. I think Hell's Kitchen will sell tickets based on Jay-Z and Alicia Key's performance on the show, but I think The Outsiders will end up having a longer run and will recoup.
