I imagine the idea behind the Kennedy Center Honors and salutes like it, is to honor the legacy of that celebrity's work, and allow the celebrity to just sit back and relax, without the added pressure to take the stage (especially if they're getting up in years). I doubt the guest performers (often colleagues and younger stars) are expecting to outdo the original artist; they're reprising those songs to show how much they've have been inspired and entertained.

Van Dyke told People magazine that he was surprised by the special: He walked into Television City expecting a press day but was instead treated to a 2-hour tribute featuring archival footage and live performances of some of the greatest hits from his career. He told People afterward, "It's difficult to say how I felt. I came home, and I said, 'You know something? It's going to be a couple of days before this actually sinks in that it happened.' I never expected that kind of recognition. My whole life went before me. I didn't realize I had done so many things while I was 75 years in show business.”

Van Dyke, who turns 99 in December, says he has no plans to retire, and might tour with a one-man show, talking about his career.

Anyway, I'm glad CBS aired a tribute to Van Dyke - something it oddly didn't do for CBS veteran Carol Burnett. Her ''90 Years'' special aired on NBC.

Van Dyke's ''98 Years of Magic'' originally was broadcast last December. I imagine CBS is reairing it now to refresh the memories of Emmy voters.
