Yes, I agree completely. Dick van Dyke is a 98-year old class act and all-around mensch and I'm sure he is very grateful for the accolades that have been heaped upon him over the last ten years as he has continued to perform and delight the generations of people who have grown up loving him. If it were me I'd dread being forced to sit in a car and make sure I looked appreciative but he is a bigger man than me.
I imagine CBS is afraid that if it's just talking heads and clips that people will tune out. Personally I found the little video clips of people like Billie Eilish (!) paying tribute were more gripping than the numbers.
I was sorry Skylar Astin's number didn't come off better because I think he is a real inheritor of the kind of light-entertainment mantler that van Dyke was so hailed. |
