I agree. I think Hepburn's work in Delicate Balance is remarkable. I hear her line readings when I open the play (a favorite). She was ideally cast, and made us believe all of the erudition and exactitude in the Albee diction is spontaneous conversational speech, no small feat in a film. And we absolutely believe she's Kate Reid's sister; they even look like the same family, oddly enough (and infamously, Reid replaced a fired Kim Stanley in mere days, learning the script on the plane to London). I've never fully warmed to Scofield's Tobias, but Hepburn's balancing act (!) works wonders. I'm one of those rare Hepburn fans who thinks her best work is entirely after African Queen. I'm not a consistent admirer of her youthful work, which often strikes me as arch. But Agnes, Eleanor, and Mary are a trio of great career high performances.
