I agree that A DELICATE BALANCE is in the pantheon of great American plays. I've seen most of the east coast revivals (the one at the McCarter was quite good). Probably the first Broadway one with Rosemary Harris, Grizzard and Mary Beth Hurt was my favorite, in spite of Stritch who was amusing though miscast. But kids, nobody has surpassed the gorgeousness and heartbreak of the original production with the great Jessica Tandy and her husband Hume Cronyn, young Marian Seldes at her most histrionic and the sardonic and bitter performance of Rosemary Murphy. And I can still hear Carmen Mathews sputtering "We...were....frightened!" Those were the days when we high school kids could afford orchestra seats.
