I long considered Delicate Balance the best American play of the 20th century

Until that disaster with Glenn Close. The previous B'Way outing with Elaine Stritch, etc was spectacular. But actually the movie is a little bit better. I am still haunted by Joseph Cotten's performance. That performance was coming from somewhere very deep. (Or I'm experiencing from somewhere deep.)

While Delicate Balance used to get my vote for best American play of the 20th Century, the best play of the 20th Century was Cherry Orchard. No contest. I wish I had seen the production that featured Annette Bening.
